Backup & Disaster Recovery
Dependency. It’s a word few people like to say, because it’s a reality that affects and rules us all. Nobody is truly independent. All of us depend on something.
Here’s the troubling thing: sometimes the very things you depend on are not very dependable. This is especially true in the computer realm where binary too often goes haywire. That’s when the whole dependency idea really comes back to bite you. When your data is not dependable you’re not dependable to your clients who are looking to you.
In the past, the strategy was to use manual tape backups. Here’s why they don’t work in today’s world:
- Human Factor: Because they’re manual, they are too dependent on the undependable human factor. In other words, they often are not done frequently enough because you would rather have your employees making money than wasting time doing something a computer could do.
- Downtime: Let’s say your server crashes. You just happened to back it up a night or two before. Congratulations. The problem is you still can’t access that data because your server is down. What if it takes 5-6 days to repair? If you have the luxury of being able to do without your server or any server dependent data for weeks at a time, then the tape system might work for you.
- Catastrophe: If you have lots of back ups made, and you store the tapes on a shelf in the server room, and a storm comes and destroys your building, you might as well have never backed up anything. The backups, like the server they tried to protect, will float away with all the money they represent. There is a better solution that will keep you from going broke.
